I spent several months with a man that was terminally ill. He refused to take the all of the pain medication prescribed to make him as pain free as possible. Me, being of weak heart, could not understand this. One day I asked, “Why don’t you take the medication so you aren’t in pain?”His replied, “If I feel some pain, then I know I am still alive.”
I pondered his reply for some time. God has given us many joys in life, but would we be able to recognize the good things He has provided if we had not experienced the pain? If we had unbreakable hearts we would never be able to feel the love of others. Our children would not know they are loved. We would miss the elated feeling of falling in love. Life would pass us by.
We would exist, but we would not live if we had unbreakable hearts!
