WHEN I WAKE

When I Wake

Sitting here in the corner of my room with my knees pulled up tight.
I find myself needing to sleep but I'm afraid to close my eyes,
For reality will return.

The candle across the room enchants me as it dances to the soft breeze.
Your touch is so present, the words you spoke echo in my mind.
As a tear slips down my cheek I begin to let go.

Afraid to lay my head down on the pillow,
Not wanting to close my eyes...
For if I wake and find you gone, I swear my heart will shatter.
So I just  close my eyes, only to rest...

As my friend you helped me grow.
You loved me fondly, your kiss of affection still warm on my lips.
Another tear slips down my cheek...
Again my selfish heart realizes it is time to let you go.

So with all that I have, I walk to the bed,
Lay my heavy heart on the pillow...
Close my eyes as I let you go.
